The Sheldonian Theatre is not only an architectural treasure but also one of Oxford’s most atmospheric and versatile event venues. Designed by renowned architect Sir Christopher Wren and completed in 1669, this Grade I-listed building offers a distinctive blend of historic grandeur and functional flexibility, making it an exceptional setting for gatherings of all kinds. Its classical exterior lends an immediate sense of occasion, while the spacious interior provides clear sightlines and excellent acoustics ideally suited for large audiences.

As the ceremonial home of the University of Oxford, the Sheldonian’s layout is particularly well suited to formal occasions such as award ceremonies, graduations, conferences and cultural performances. Located in the heart of Oxford’s City Centre, the Theatre is within walking distance of colleges, museums and accommodation options, making it a convenient choice for both local and international guests.

In the Auditorium, guests are greeted by Robert Streater’s dramatic painted ceiling, an expansive 32-panel fresco celebrating knowledge and creativity. This vivid artwork, combined with abundant natural light from tall arched windows, creates a memorable backdrop for events ranging from keynote lectures to atmospheric private dinners.

Beyond the Auditorium, The Cupola can be opened for select events, offering covered panoramic views across Oxford’s skyline and adding an unforgettable moment to private receptions or VIP gatherings. Just below sits the Old Printing Loft, an intimate setting for drinks receptions amongst the original wooden-beamed ceiling which brought Wren international fame. The Cecil Jackson Room, situated on the lower ground level, offers a quiet, versatile space for small meetings, receptions or for VIPs.

We are also delighted to partner with the Bodleian Library to offer the Sheldonian Theatre as a drinks reception venue for weddings.

In addition to spaces being available for hire, the Sheldonian Theatre is open as a visitor attraction, offering guided tours which can be requested as a unique touch to any event.

The Sheldonian Theatre is part of the Oxford University Event Venues portfolio which also includes the Examination Schools, St Luke’s Chapel and the University Club.
